I wonder if the authorization by LDAP group is recursive, so that if I authorize a "staff" LDAP group which contains "admin staff" and "it staff" groups, the individual members of the admin staff and it staff will be permitted...

Not currently. Although we can easily list multiple group names in the authorization list. If recursion is a popular feature, we could also add that. - Willie
